Response speed: why replying within the hour changes everything
An inbound lead has a very short shelf life. Why response speed beats the pitch — and how to reply fast without being a slave to your phone.
An inbound lead has a very short shelf life
You get a lead — a filled form, a DM, an email. How long before you reply? If it's more than an hour, you're already playing against yourself.
The study "The Short Life of Online Sales Leads" (Harvard Business Review, 1.25 million leads analyzed) is unambiguous: contacting a lead within an hour of their request makes you nearly 7 times more likely to qualify it — to have a real conversation with a decision-maker — than waiting even one hour more. And 60 times more than waiting 24 hours.
An inbound lead is fresh. After a few hours it cools: they've contacted a competitor, or the momentum simply faded.
Speed beats the pitch
We think we win a deal with the best argument. In reality, on an inbound lead, whoever replies first gains a huge head start: they frame the conversation, they look serious, they occupy the mental space before anyone else.
An average pitch delivered within 10 minutes beats a perfect pitch delivered the next day. Responsiveness is a signal: it says "I'm a pro, and I take you seriously."
What "fast" means, concretely
No need to aim for the second. A simple, sustainable rule:
- Ideal: within the hour.
- Minimum: same day.
- Never: more than 24 hours without a first message.
And above all: after that first contact, immediately set a next action date, so it doesn't fall back into oblivion. That's where a system takes over — your Today view resurfaces the lead at the right time.
